POSTMAN'S THEFTS
Stole to Pay Gambling Debts (By Telesraph— Preaa Aaiociatfon,) AUCKLAND, Last Night. Rayniond George Kelly, a postman, to-day admitted admitted 25 chargcs of the theft of postal paclcets, and was sentenced to nine months' Teformative detention by Mr Justice Fair in the Hupreme Court. Coitnsel, in pleading for lenieney. said that the prisoner was a married man, 34 years of age, and had his wife aud two children dependent upon him. He had had 20 years of service. "Gambling was responsible for the position in which he now found himself. He had taken the money in order to pay bookmakers and money-lenders. Complete xestitution had been made from the Superannuation Fund, His Honour said it was impossible to grant probation. The prisoner had held a position of trust, and the offences had occurred over a period of eight months. In sentencing Kelly to nine months' reformative detention, the Judge said that he took into account the previous good character of the accused and the fact that the probation oificer spoke highly of him.
