Big Ellerslie Fixture To-morrow FIELDS REVIEWED
(Special— From
AUCKLAND, Last Night. After a vcry lengthy spell thete will be racing in the province at Ellerslie on Saturday, on tbe oocasion of the annual fixture of the Pakuranga Hunt Club, and with excellent fields engaged, the i'orm should prove higlily interesting in view of the bigger meetings ta follow in the next few weeks. lletting will Ge on the old one-two systein, and tlie course ought to be in good order, even if a bit on the soft side, which is to be expeeted at this tiine of' year. This fixture looks like giving the new racing season in tli© north an excellent selid-off. The most richly-endowed race ou Saturday is the Pakuranga Hunt Cup, and for sucli a valuable stake the field is well above the average, for several noted cross-country performers have ! made their acceptante, in addition to many hunters, Awapuni uud New PJymouth stables being represented as well as muuy provinciul ones. The brilliaut Windsor Lad hus tp give away lots of wejght and he will be lully tcsted over the trying coUrse, three miles, with the hill to be clnnbed twice. Thespis is a splendid 'cliascr, but lie has been oli' the scene for sonio time. lrish Comet is good also, and while he has not rcvealed outstanding stamina as yet this may improvc; a fine feneer be is going to be oue of the prime fancies if he has got over the soreuess noticeable eariicr in the Week. Tanglcdj raised from 10.5 to 11.0 by virtue of liis two Riccarton sucCesseo, is still well placed for a horse with so recent winniug performances and he ,may be the. hardest to beat, for he 'knows his way round this course. Miss Pango is an unlikely startef. A juinper in race fonn is Sieepy, who schooled well here, while likely improvcrs are Ring ltod, Kiukle, Loncjon, Rozol, Domo and Lochiel Lad. The last-nained is also engaged in the openiug event and that effort will be a last-ininute guide to his Hunt Cup jwospects, which . lnay be quite bright. Tangled reads ' best over All Irisb, Sieepy, Kiukle and Lochiel Lad. Horses tbat will later on be contesting the principal northern bandicap events figuTe in the Jellicbe Handicap, which this time is to be run over a male instead of ten i'urlongs as previously. Enge will not lack supporb ai'ter his brilliant Trentham iorm, for he is now well up to wesight. Valmiut has yet to win an open race, despite which he is nest to Enge, and a repetition of his form here in June will bring hfin into prominence. Armacourt is niceiy placed, and if the going happens to be very bad, sbe will be better served. Kiltowyn is. galioping brilliantly, but in his case a firmer track appears to be required, judged on
past results. Vfersant's witlxdrawal from tbe sprint suggests that iiis trainer is satisfied with the bandicap prize and as he too is a good iniler and he revealed good iorm in June, he js a prospect. Tybalt has come on fast of late, and Knigbt ot Australia is always liable to surprise under the prevailing couditions. Merial lieads the second half of the bandicap and now a foUr-year-old with winter | racing to fit her she may be a very tough proposition, especially as she showed up over this distance at Trentham. Lord Val, Loombination, and Erndale, will be the best of the others, with Erndale an interesting runtioi. However, Merial is fancied over Vainiint, Enge, Versant and Armaeourt. The Dunedin Handicap will see cohsiderable interest manifested in the doings of two of last leason's fino two-year-olds, Baclielor King and Huntingmore, whiie Maori Song's brilliant wins in haok company at Trentham last month will probably cause him tq be made favourite. Fersen is very fqrward, and so too are Gay Seton, Johnny Walls, Kilonsa, Erndale and Valandto. It is a fine field of its lcind, and while Maori Song would be i'avoured under very bad couditions, the two juvcniles will be diffioult to beat if tbe track is rcasonably firm. BraCkoted horses aro tbo following:— Sylvia Park Handicap: Silver Glow and tligh Sea; Siega and Ahmabu; Rajanya and Marie's Aere. Form horses are tbe following: — 11.45: GREENMOUNT STEEPLEOHASE.— Lochiel Lad, Platter, Rozel. 12.29; HARRIS HURDLES.— Gadger, L'Allegro, Cbang. 1.0: SYLVIA PARK HANDICAP.— Captain Bruce, Rainier, Palustre. 1.54: JELL1COE HANDICAP.— Enge, Merial, Valmiut. 2.39: PAKURANGA HUNT CUP.— All lrish, Tangled, Kinkle. 3.19: AUCKLAND HANDICAP.— Dutch Girl, Youug Paddon, Mai de Mer. 3.59; LAD1ES ' BRACELET.— Hirangi, Diacquedoon, Skyway. 4,44: DUNEDIN HANDICAP— Maori Song> lluntingmore, Bachelof King.
