Defeated 19 to 5
MAGPIE FORWARDS SUPERIOR Dalton-Reid- Jackson Combination Shines HOOKING WEAKNESS SouthlaM. holders of the Ranfurly Shield, went down to Hawke's Bay by 19 points to five in an interestmg game at Nelson Park, Hastings yesterday. Credlt for the victory must go in the main to the Hawke's Bay pack, who, with their All Black representatives always prominent, played well in the loose, aitnougn tney wero outhooked. The rearguard was apt to I'umhle, and lacked its usual penetration. The tearas were as follow: — HAWKE'S BAY N. M. Dyer V. G. Herbert. It. Devine, E. Apsey C. Robins, H. L. Bradley L. S. Clotbier (capt) W. A. Johnson T. Reid, Bowman, Griffin, C. O Brien E. Jackson, P. Dalton, H. F. Fraser SOUTHLAND. J. Ballantyne A. Sutherland J- Miles R. Henderson A. Wesuey G. Tbomas (capt) J. Purdue. (J. George • It. Ward. L. George, S. Purdue, Irwin C. Soper, J. Mattingly, J. Dunstan Faulty handling.by Hawke's Bay, wbose backs dropped passes wbile standing fiat-footed, let Soutbland tbrougb imemdiately. The. visitors won tbe hrst scrum neaj tbe line and Tbomas narrowly missed a field goal. Tbe Bay cleared and, when S. Purdie was caugbt ott'side, Johnson scraped tbe outside oi tbe uprigbts with a long penalty. .Despite tbe fact tnat Hawke's Bay bad an all-round weigbt advantage in the pack thev found it anytbing but easy to gain an advantage in tne mitial stages of tbe game. Capably led by Ward tbe visiting packinen sliowed tbemsejves botb . fast and energetic, and Dalton was repeatedly beaten to tbe ball in set scrums. With plenty of ball, J. Purdue, Thomas, Sutherland, and Wesney showed tbemselves dangerous, but Miles at centre was a weak link. From a forward rusb, however, Devine and Apsey took cliarge and bullocked down tbe side-line, tbe latter taking a last-minute pass to go oyer in tbe corner as Devine was grassed a yard from tbe line. ' Heroert's kick missed. Tbe nest try, five minutes later, was a perfect exliibition of-team work. From a scrum tbe ball travelled to Robins, who cross-kicked in tbe patb of Herbert. Tbe big winger made ground until held up, when the ball was passed infield to Devine, to Bradley, and finally to Jackson, who covered tbe last 25 yards in an eartb-sbaking gallop tliat the tbree men wbo attempted tackles were powerless to stop. Bradley failed to convert. The third try was scored by Devine, after a good run, Herbert converting. It seemed strange that Hawke's Bay, althougk' beaten m a majority of tbe scrums, could hook tbe ball wbeu they needed it, particularly near tbe line. A fine break by Ward almost bore fru(t, Sutherland, wbo took tbe pass, being forced out near tbe line. Tbe Bay held a distinct territorial advantage throughout tbe spell, and their taclsling, especially that of tbe All Black forward trio, was deadly. Tbe spell ended with the score % Hawke's "Bay 11 Soutbland 0 Two determmed assaults on the line by Sutherland 'signalised tbe beginning of tbe second lialf and tlien from a scrum near tbe Bay ljne, Irwin, wbo bad been playing a maguificent game, tb'rew liimself over. )Vesney converted. Soutjiland again attacked and Sutherland was unlucky to miss toucliingdown, when be beat Dyer iir a race for tbe ball. Then tbe Reid-Jackson-Dalton combination swept down tbe field with the ball at,tbe toe to the twenty-tive where O'Brien secured, passed to Robins and Devine, for tbe latter to race over. Herbert missed the kick. Tbe game for tbe first balf-bour of the second spell was mere even, and the bright visiting inside backs ininted several penetrations. Tbe Hawke's Bay tackling lapsod badly and tbe forwards took a rest. Near the end of tbe game, however, play brightened up, a good brefik by Robins failing when Herbert dropped a pass. With a minute to go Apsey secured on tlie twenty-five and bad scored before his startled opponents Unew wliat bad happened. Herbert converted as tbe fiual wbistle sounded, tbe score being: Hawke's Bay 19 Soutbland 5 GAMES , FOR TO-MORROW Following are the Rugby fixtures for to-morrow.
