LECTURES FAIL

(Own Correspondent-

Rey. Jardine's Tour of United States FEW PAY TO LISTEN

-By 'Air Mail.)

LONDONj July 31. "The~ Duke of Windsor is being caused distress by the lectures now being delivered in Araerica . by the 3tev., Anderson Jardine, who conducted a religious service at • the J)uke's wedding," stated the diplomatie correspondent of jbhe Daily Express last Saturday. "I understand," he added, "that, while the Duke, has no authority over ATr. Jardine, he would prefer that his lectures should deal with theological matters, as . originally proposcd, rather than with the constitutional crisis of last December," * A representative of the eame journal, telegcaphing from New York last, Tuesdayi said: The Rev. Anderson Jardine to-day admitted thafc his United States lecture tonr has been a, failure. He replied to cbarges that his attacks on the Arokbishop of Oanterbury and Earl Baldiyiu were distressing and _embarrassibg the Uuke of Windsor by declaring that the same forces that caused the abdication were working against his lecture tour in Axnerica. Mr Jardine's tour, loudly heralded, began five days after his arrivai in Nesv York on July 5. Now the enifchusiasm which gfeeted- hiin has disappeared, &dds the correspondent. Mr. ■ Jardine, speaking from Niagara FaHs, said ; — "I don't think for a moment that wbat I have said can have caused the Duke embarfassment . or pain. 1 helieve I am doing tlie right thing in attacking the heads of the Church of England, and tliat the l)uke doesn't see the position as I see it, "I follow the dfctates of my conscience. I ain gbundantly 'sincere. 1 haye aoted from, the hest of motives. I am the Duke's champion. He is an exile; so am I. My .tour has been a failure, 1 know, because the opposition here, the Episcopal Church, is fighting me." There is certainly not much left" of . the" enthusiasm which greeted Mr. Jardine's arrivai, states the correspondent. The publio seems little interested in the amhitious tour planned by Mr Hugo Ernst, who is handling fche clergyman's affairs. Five days after his arrivai in New York, Mr t I

Jardine faced the Amcrican public for the first time in Atjantic City. To hold the expected crowd Mr Ernst booked a liall seatiug 4500, and charged from 4/6 to 1/-. Seventy-one people attended. Mr Jardine hlamed the hot weather, the withdrawal of support by various. associutions who objected to advance advertising, i'paturing bim as "The l\lan who Marricd The Duke and Duchess of Windsor." The viear went to Baltimore, hometown of the Duchess, to lecture at the Lyric Theatre, which holds 3000 people. This time 882 people paid from oue to two sliillings to hear him. His last appearance as a Jecturer was oh Sunday at ltochester in a hall capable oi' holding 4000. Fewer than i00 paid to go in. The loss on the tour was £800, and the charities which were to benefit from tbe tour bave received nothing.
