Chinese Wlll "Drive Japanese Back to Their Ships Within a Week" (Received 19, 12,20 p.m.J SHANGHAI, Aug. 18. After another day Of bomhardment, bombing, explosions, fires and street fighting in Shanghai it is still impossible to say which •ide is winnifig, though tbe Mayor, Mr, Yiti, says that the Chinese will have driven the Japanese back to their ships within a week. During to-night 's air-raid one homber scored a hit on the telephone exchange within the British defenee area. Anether boinber fiew over the Chinese positions at Chapei and Kiangwan, where buildings were blown up and fires started. A third plane dropped no bombs but caused panic' among the inhabitants in the French concession by flying just above the roof-tOps. Both sides deny that the plane which bombed the telephone exchange was theirs, but people who watched it from the roof-tops insist that it was Japanese. A fierce ducl followcd between warships and Chinese artillery at Pootung in which the Idzumo and other ships stretching to SVoosung joined in. One shell set fire to British -cotton-mills. Several fires are now raging. A fierce 16-hours battle in the city ended by the withdrawal of the Chinese troops who had forced their way into the International Settlement, many being killed on both sides. The Chinese elaimed that they had advanced in the Yangtse-poo dislrict, north-east of the city. They also elaimed to have presscd baek the Japanese in a section of Chapei which they have held. Japanese bombers several times ponnded the Chinese lines at Chapei and Kiangwan, diving daringly low before releasing their bombs. The Japanese heavily bombed Chenju, on the western ontskirts, wreeking the Chinese radio statiori and laying the village to waste. Japanese warships opened fire on Chinese who liad reaehed the bank of the Whangpoo river. Their firing silenced the attackers. The Chinese again repulsed a Japanese attempt to land at Jukong IWharf, with heavy Japanese losses.
