Minister Predicts Busy Time for Timber Trade WHITE-PINE EXPORT BAN

(BT TelevraDh —

WELLINGTON^ Last Nigbt. In opening the annual conference. of the the- New Zealand Sawmillers' Federation, the Hon. P. Langstone, Commissiolier of. State Forests, quoted * an array of figures . to. show* the terrible effects of the slump period on the industry and in the provision of homes for people, the loss to the building trades and the loss to youth for the want of openings to these tradea. He said that when the housing survey was completed it would show a shortage of tens of thousands of houses, and sawmillers and ' allied tracjes, he suggested, could . look ' forward with confidenee - to a husy future. It was the proelaimed policy of the Government to use in State dwellings as much New Zealand material as possible and to spread the materials used ovex- as wide a field as possible ; for instance, New Zealandnxade tiles were being used instead of imported corrugated iron. Speaking of the curtailment of export of white pine, ho said that much as he regretted this, we must preserve and proteet the New Zealand iuterests, and he felt sure that for tlie most part the federation would co-operate with the Government in providing the necessary white pine to meet the requirements . of the dairy industry^ which played such an important part in -the' export trade.
