HALTED AT BARRIER

Iniending Train Passengers Had No Tickets (By Telegraph— Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Reference to the incident at tho Wellington railway station on Sunday night when two intending travellero by the Limited express— Messrs V. R. Meredith, Auckland ..Crown prqsecutor, and R. McKenzie, the All Black — missed the train bv being held up at the barrier, was made yesterday by the general manager of railways^ Mr G. H. Mackley. Mr Mackley said that Mr Meredith had cailed on him on Monday and had explained that he did not hold tho department in any way respqnsible for his missing the train. Mr Mackley also said that the stationmaster's explanation of the happening would have been considered sufficient had it not been for comment which had since; come to the ears of Tailway officials — comment which suggested the need for a further statement. The facts were that a berth had been secured for Mr Meredith and a ticket was awaiting him at the ticket office. Instead of picking up his ticket he had proceeded direct to the barrier without a ticket and was stopped . by the porter on duty. Before the barrier was closed the stationmaster cailed for any pcrsons among the big crowd who had tickets for the train to come l'onvard. There was n» respouso to this call, and the bar-» rier was then closed.
