Havelock North Group A full and varied programme was thoroughly enjoyed at the August cneeting of the Havelock North Women 's Institute. Mrs. Chapman Taylor presided, and two new members were welcomed. An invitation was received to the birthday meeting of Pukahu Women ;s Institute. Mrs. Chapman-Taylor spoke about some of the social problems with which women are confronted to-day. She urged the vital need for children to be trained from earliest days in habits of self-control, in order to promote physical, mental and spiritual purity. The speaker was sincerely thanked for her earnest and courageous address. During the social half-hour, a fiveminutes blindfold knitting contest cieated mueh fun. Mrs. Loekyer won the prize for greatest length and fewest mistakes. A thoroughly practical lesson in the craf t of box-covering with cretonne, linen, tapestry and other materials, was given by Mrs. Holderness. Every step was shown clearly, and the finished spe'eimen showed what professional results can be achieved with time and care. Some beautiful posy bowls were shown by members of the garden circle, and the judge, Mrs. Vaughan, gave her decision as f ollows : — Miss Elliott 1, Mrs. Bridgman 2, Mrs. May. 3. Mrs. Greenwood caaie iirst in the competition for the best bloom, and Mrs. Heenan for six pikelets. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Norwell, Paynter, Sunderland and Usherwood, and Misses Hunter and McCorkindale.
