Employer?s Warning INDUSTRIAL LEGISLATION

AUCKLAND, This Day. A warning that economic difficulties lie ahead of New Zealai*d was given by the president of the Auckland Provincial Employers' Association, Mr. J. S. Dawes, at the annual meeting today. He said that, while it was gratilying to note that the increase in prosperity rucorded in 1935-36 still continued, the main reason for New Zealand's p'rosperity was the high prices- ruling for primary products, which prices it was impossible to con- . trol,, . ( , "The effecii of- the iudustrial legislation has been to penalise • the employment of labour, the ponalty varying in direet proportion- to the amount of labour employed," he said. He added that the only private employer practically sheltered,- apart from the Government, was the small employer or contractor known as the "free lance' ' and who employed little permanent labour. Ha said also that he was fearful of the potential scope of the Industrial Efficiency Aet, as it tended to prevent that confidence which was essential to the free development of industry.
