Monthly Meeting of Hastings Body "When a man takes office in any organisation he should make a point of attending its meetings," said Mr H. W. C. Baird, president of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, at tho Chamber's monthly meetmg last evening, when criticising the poor atte'ndance. Owing .to several counter-at-tractions in both Hastings and Napier only six members were present at the meeting. Mr Baird deplored the non-attend-ance at the monthly meetings of men who should be, and seemed to be, interested in civic. and national affairs. "I think we should speak strongly on this matter," he said. "The trouble probably is, that many men link themselvcs with too many organisations and caimot attend any' of them properly," said Mr F. E. Smith. Mr Baird occupied the chair. Tho resigpation of Mr Joseph Wilson from the membership eommxttee, owing to his leaving at the end of thc week for an extended stay-in Sydney, Avas received with regret. A date was hxed for tho proposed lunclieon to be given by tho Cliamber later in the montli to the Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A. Maddison. Mr Maddison will speak at the luncheon m civic affdhK* Arrangements wero complete.1 a1-'-for an address' to b© given at the' end of this month hy Professor Murphy, who will speak on "The Banking] Situation and the Reserve Bank." The' address will be given in Hastings and will bo free and all residents are to be invited to attend. Mr Baird stressed that, no matter what political views migbt hold, money matters should interest everyone. The average man lie gaid, knpw very little about eredit and banking mcthods. The lecture would not be political in the party sense.
