EXCITING HOCKEY

Gisborne Women's Jeams in Napier ONE LOSS AND ONE DRAW The chief" attraction for hockey enthusiasts in Napier on Saturday was the presence of f-wo women* s teams from tb^i Ivia Toa club (Gisborne), who piayed matches against the Napier and Technical Old Girls clubs respectively. Both of the Kia Toa teams proved themselves really good players, and, thouglr ihe B team met A-grade players in the Technical Old Girls team, t-hey put u-p a good cohtest. * Botli of these teams were so similarly costumed in scai'let and grey that it was not always easy 'to (listinguish the two sels of players. In tho Napier-Kiai Toa game the visitors made the pace from the start and kept up a strong attack which lrept tho Napier backs busy defending. Several times the bystauders got very excited as tho ganic shifted rapidly from one end of the field to the other, and only stern defence kept -tho forwards of both sides from scoring. Kia Toa, however, liad inanii'cstly the bcst of tho first ppell. which ended in their favour by two goals to ni|. When Kia' Toa added a third goal- early in the second half, matters looked the reverse of promising for Napier. However, the Napier backs and forwards rallied as only a courageous team can and, swinging int-o a combination that was alinost like clockwork, they ovcrran tho visitors in the last 20 minutes of play, putting on tliree goals iu the final quarter of an hour and thus drawing lcvel. Napier were aided by the fact that 1 their opponents had ahnost run themselves to a standstill in the first spell and wero feeliug the cfiects of the extremely fast pace they themselves had set. The result, however, was eminently satisfactory, for their was little xo clxoose between the two teams on the day, though the Napier forward lino was not playing so well togetlier at tho starfc as it usually does. In the, Technical Old Girls-Kia Toa B game, the Technical team was definitely superior in all departments, but in tho first spell they were met by a very stubborn .defence, , which, whilo conceding quite a number of -penalty corners, kept the score for Technical down to one goal at ha.lf-time. In the second spell the Kia Toa defence weakened and four more goals wero added by Technical, the game ending in a win for Technical by five goals to nil. In the only men's senior game piayed, Waratahs drew with Scinde, the scoro being two all. The game was a. very exciting one, though in the first spell not a great deal of combination w-as shown by eit-her side. Both sides did better in the second spell, but neither couid gain an advantage. In- tho men's junior games Taradale beat Kiwi Gold by three go^ls to one in a fast game which would probably have gone the other way had Kiwi Gold had a full team. Their forwards 'piayed with more combination than did those of Taradale, but their defence was "weakened by the absenee of a strong player in tlie back divjsion. Kiwj Blue beat Kiwi AVhit-e by three goals to one. Besults were as follow j ■ WOMEN Napier (3) v. Kia Toa A (Gisborne) (3). Mrs Simonson, Aliss P.
