(Received 16, 11.0 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 15. The Japanese have carried tho war to the Chinese capital this afternoon, eight $rar- 'planes dropping bombs on the main thoroughfare and aerodrome at Nanking and two bombs near the Ming Palace. Ten Chinese 'planes took off and claim that they brought down three machines. The city was. rocked with the Impact of. bombs and anti-aircraft fire. Damage and loss of life cannot at present be ascertained. The Daily Telegraph 's Nanking correspondent says: Thc Chinese claim that 12 Japanese air bombers were shot down in air battles over Nanking today and Hangchow ycsterday. An excited populace at Nanking witnesscd to-day's encounter, when twclve Japanese three-engined Heinkel bombers from tho aerodrome at Formosa came in sight.ond ten Chinese fighters soared to the attack. The Japanese, aftcr dropping bombs near the aerodrome aud thc Ming Palace, turned back. The fighters pursued them for 90 minutes, bringing down six machines, tivo in flames, one kiliing two Chiuese women when it fell. The Chinese declare that they did not lose a single inan or machine. "General Chiang Kai-shek reports that the Chinese machines brought down six Japanese planes of those raiding the Hangchow aerodrome and drove Off the reinaiudcr. Japanese planes silenced thc Chinese artillery conCgntration on Hougkew 'before material damage waa done to the Japanese Settlement. '
