Winch Purchased, Tke Napier Harbour Board has purcliased a second-hand pile-driving wiuch from Kaihoke, and it is expected that this will arrive on the Breakwater works at an early date. East Coast Highways. A tender of £32,114 has been passed by the Public Works Department for the reconstruction of some (ive miles of the Gisborne-Te Araroa highway. Bridges over the Waikohu and Waipuka rivers on the Whakatane-Gisborne highway are to be erected at a cost of £9687. Auckland Cathedral. It has been decided to institute an appeal to the people of the Auckland diocese for £50,000 to add to the £60,000 which is expected to be produced from the bequest of the late Mjss M. T. Horton for tlio erection of a new Anglican Cathedral in Auckland. A further £25,000 is to be asked for as an enaowment I'und. Inner Harbour Channel. The operations of the Napier Harbour Board's dredger J.D.O. at the Inner Harbour liave had tho effect of appreciably iniprovjng the entrance channel. At to-day' s • meeting of the board, the works coinmittee reported that an examination of the recorded depths at the Inner Harbour showed that tho work was appreciably improving the entrance channel, ihe dredger still being at work there. Anderson, who was accompanied by his daughter, had the misfortune to como into coliision with a timber lorry, which. was parked on the road near Te Pohue. The impact was fairly severe, Mr, Anderspn's car being extensively damaged, but beyond minor abrasions and shock, it is stated, there was no personal injury. Tho vessel sailed from Bora Bora at 5 p.m, on Thursday in continuafcion fo the cruise. Early-Morning Fire. The Hastings Fire Brigade was called out at 5.30 o'clock this morning to a fire in a fiouse in Karamu road, Has'tings, occupied by Mrs Bullot. The damage was confined to a oolonial couch and a small area of the floor round it. A spark from the fire-grate appears to have been responsible for the outbreak. A hole about a foot square was burnt in the floor. The brigade removed the couch outside and quickly extinguislied the blaze. lnsuranccs on the furnituro total £200. Tar-Sealing Work. A comprehensive programme of tarsealing on roads within the Hawke's Bay county will shortly be put in hand by tke Hawke's Bay County Council. This is for work on tke following routes: Hastings-Maraekakako, Waioki-ki-Pakowkai, Te Mata-Tuldtuki^ Mangateretere*Te Awanga, Napier ' ParkEissington and Tukituki-Hamoana. Tkese operations will complete tke main kigkway work on tke flats of tke county. Separate tenders will be called for eaek section. It is koped to make a start as soon as tke weatker becomes sufficiently warm for bitumen work. Tke area to be covered eomprises about 16 milos of roadway.
