ITiv TelesraDh-
WELLINGTON. Last Night'. In- reply to complaints by Welling* ton businessinen concerning the ia* regularity of tfie mail service 'acroai the Tasman, the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones, stated that no coa:raets existed with shipping companiea for the transport of mails at regular' tntervals to and from Australia and jlaees further afield. - Mr Jones said that the department took advantage of the best - steamef eonnections offering and an expendl* ture of less than £1000 a month was n>-. eurred for the carriage of mails acrosf ; the Tasman, so considering the rm* aing expenses of the steamers ^ovejR this rcmte, it would be , appreci&ted that the department was not an a pos»i tion to dictate to the shipping oww ers on the sailing schedules that .should be observed. He was sure| howevei that the present complaints would Df removed when the trans-Tasman aSf mail service was in operation.
