WORK STILL NEEDED
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ''To-day the motor-vehiole has driven the transport animals from the towns, and the necessify for the operations of the society is not so readily realised,". says the annual report of the Hawke's Day Society for the Prevention of Qruelty to Animals. But, the report emphasises,. the. aociety's work is as important and necessary to-day as it was before the ti.se of mechanical transport became practically universal. Transport animals are! not the only animals requiring the attehti'on of the society j there' remains a big field among live stock in the country districts and domestic animals in the towns. . The society' s activities during tlle year, the report adda, have had the effect of diminishing cruelty/ both deliberate and "unintentional, resulting from ignorance of the proper treatment. of anilnails. Where cruelty is 'deliBerate, the known policy- of the society to institute prosecutions has proved ' a valuable deterfent; • - The object of the sooiety is to^prevent cruelty rather than -to punish- persons guilty of cruelty. Prosecutions are necessary at times, but if, the suffering of animals can be prevented without Court proceedings this is always more satisfactory, the report states.
