Hawke's Bay Labourers' Award in Dispute UNIONS AT ODDS

(By 'i'elegraph-

PALMERSTON N., This Day. Contending that the Hawke's Bay Builders' and General Labourers' TJnion had no authority to enter into an agreement for the settlement of the dispute and had not complied with the requirments of the Act and had no jurisdiction the Wellington Industrial district Labourers' and Related Trades Enion was in conflict "with the former organisation in a case of an unusual naturc in the Arbitration Court. Mr. R. J. Reardon, who appeared for the Hawke's Bay TJnion, said that ifc reached complete settlement with the employers in the Conciliation Council and applied for ratification . of this by the framing of an aw.ard on its terms, Mr. Justice O'Regan commented that the Arbitration Aet placed a restriction on the multiplieity of unions, hut it was a curious thing that both those in the case before the Court were of registered. The Judge was 'inforqied that the Hawke's Bay TJnion was originally au offi§hoot of the Wellington TJnion. ' Mr, P. M. Butler, for the latter, subpaitted four principal grounds of objection and alleged that if the recommendation was made into an award, it would deprive the workers in the area concerned of the beneflts of a more heneficial settlement. He contended that the settlement in the Wellington case in many respects was better in wages and conditionji than the Hawke's Bay application. It was alleged that local bodies iD Hawke's Bay joined with the Hawke's Bay union in an attempt a settlement bciiig anived at in the Wellington dispute. He contcndcd that there were iudications pointing to a conspiracy betwccn the employers in Hawke's Bay and the Hawke's Bay TJnion to prgvent the Wellington settlement heing applicable to that area. Tho proceedjngs were adjourned till Monday when the hooks of tho Hawke's Bay Union will he produced.
