PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS

Council to Reduce Them to. Twelve ONLY AT BUSY INTERSECTIONS The pedestrian safety crossing zone system instituted in Hastings towards the close of last year has lately been reconsidered by the Hastings Bc igh Council and its traffic departmem, ' and la-st night it was decided to reduce the, number of such erossings in the main business area to 12. The traffic inspector, Mr D. Mann, reported that he was of the opinion that the present number . of pedestrian erossings was in excess of' requirements, and cpiisidered they should -bd placed only at'intexseetions where traffic was. such that it was necessary to provide f acilities for the safe transit of pedestrians across the. road, where motorists could reasonably expeet pedestrians to" be crossing the road, and where a reasonable amount of supervision could be maintained. r Pedestrian erossings in excess of th cse,. -, f ftqhtiements tend to make all road-fisefk'aix different to the obsexvance of this safety measure," he said. * The inspector rceomuxended that the following erossings only should b# maintained in Heretaunga "street:-^ Karamu road, four sides; Bussell street, three sides;' Eailway roady oue Bidej ana Market street, four sides. The council approvod of this restrict jon, but with the additional pxw vis'on of pedestrian erossings at thei corner of Karamu road and St. Aubyn street and at the various sehoOls. The Mayor/ Mr G. A. Maddison, pointed out that the council had had the question under consideration for, some time, as it had been realised that there was need for a more permanent' marking. At present the cost of mark« ing oft various parlting and pedestrian areas was excessive. The council was investigating the possibilities of a mor# permanent means of marking to maka the cost nxpre reasonable.
