, WAIROA, Last Night. The essential f eatures which a landing ground, as an emergency field and a future. airport for the district of Wairoa, would need to possess, were briefiy outlined to-day by Mr A. G. Harris, resident engineer of the Public Works Department. , Mr Harris was addressing members ot the Wairoa County Couneil and the air committee of the borough council, iMessrs F. Ltrry, L. E. Galbraith, and M. ,1. Gemmell, who were accompauied by the town clerk, Mr H. L. O 'Loughleu. Mr Harris tracing the history of the movemenf to establish an aerodroine, stated that in February 1935, he was a&ked tb look for a suitable emergency landing ground. , The . chief pilot of Gisborne Airways had pointed out that ai- area near the coast, free from fog and abbve -fl.Qod -level, was desirable. A ranway of - 800yds. at least was requircd and - about 100 acres of ground. - Alr O'Loughlen read a letter from the Public Works Department, Wei i'ngton, suggesting that the Wairoa loj cal ,autkorines iiidicdte several sites, 'wliich ■ the aerodrome officer would inspect arid, select the most suitable. Mr Berry declared that the meeting was wasting valuable time, and moved that the Public Works aviation engineer be asked to report on five. named areas. Mr W. Tait seconded the inotion, which. was carned unanimousiy. Mr Nolah, County. ehairmaii, stated he would ask the connty engineer, Mr R. W. Hawthorne, to act -with Mr iHafris . in preparing rough arca plans ,of the'sitcs. , .
