MUSICAL APPRECIATION DISCUSSED BY THE REV. KENNETH LIGGETT

An interesting afternoon was enjoyed yesterday by the members of the Hastings Women 's Community Club when the Bev. Kenneth Liggett spoke about musical appreciation at the meeting arranged by Mrs Gordon Boach, leader of the music circle. The club Iounge looked very bright with attractively arranged flowers — pinlc japonica in the wall baskets, fioating bowls of panSies and vases of Ico« land poppies' and jonquils. Mr Liggett was introduced to the members by Mrs G. Boach, and all wore interested in his informal talk. He said that many people failed to appreciate the music to which they listened because they did not undestand the structure.

He traced the development of music from the very early times, vocal music iirst, then the discovery of the first instruments and the first notes. He illustrated on the piano the development of harmony, and while speaking on this subject mentioned that yery often in modern music the greater number of discords the composer crammed into a bar the greater the tune. The speaker urged the members not to praise music they heard unless they really felt it deserving of praise, and not to say music was "divine," "wonderful" and "superb" when it did not appeal to them at all. Mr Liggett interspersed his talk with amuswig stories, and at the conclusion played. several piano solos1, which wore much appreciated by the audienco. Mrs H. W. C. Baird expressed thanks to Mr Liggett for a very delightful afternoon. A. delieious tea was enjoyed by the members before the afternoon concluded. Among those present were: — Mrs Gordon Boach, Mrs H.
