THEFT OF A SUIT
Young Man Admitted To Probation Cfiarged with stealing a suit of clotfies valued at £5 from His former employe'r, David Gordon, of Greenmeadows, James Johnston, single, aged 18 years, pleaded guilty before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in tfie Hastings Magistrate's Court tfiis morning. A term of probation was imposed.' Detective Campion said tfiat defendant had cycled out to Greenmeadows and taken a'suit from a whare on Mr. Gordon 's property. Apparently fie had seen this suit while working there some time before and "had takenla fancy to it." The suit was found in Johnston's possession, and he then frankly admitted having taken it, saying he did so "on the spur of the moment." Nothing was previously known by the police against Johnston. • "It is a pity you have done this," remarked the Magistrate. "It is your first offence and, being theft, it is a serious one. Apparently your present employer thinks something of you, for he is prepared to take you back." Johnston was admitted to probation for one year, a condition being that he should pay 10/- to the owner of the suit.
