Meshing for Sharks in Australia

SYDNEY, July 31. Tlio Ministor of Works and Local Government, Mr. Spooner, said tliis week that the Government had deeided to invite tenders for a contract to
mesh the beaches between BaTrenjoey and Port Hacking against sharks. The work would not begin later than December 1, and the Government would offer a subsidy up to £10,000 a year for two years, which was double tho subsidy offered during 1935 and 1936. "If it is found impossible, ' ' Mr. Spooner added, "to secure a contraetor who will. provide the trawlers and the plant necessary for the ' undertaking, ihe Government will consider putting boats into ^ommission to carry out the trawling after December as an experiment for the rest of the summer. "However, the Government is not anxious to do this, beeauso of the diffieulty of disposing of the catches except by the estahlishment of a fish industry, which the Governrnent -yyould not uudoilake,/5 /
