The New Zealand ericketers began the second day of the match witk Essex in fine style. Hadlee and Wallace together added 173 runs in less than two hours. Hadlee was in fine form; driving witk great power, ke hit 10 fours and two sixes in a chanceless century, kis first' for. New Zealand. Wallace ga.ve a capital display of varied stroke.play, kitting 12 fours and one six. New Zealand 's innings, like the county's, tailed away after the fall of the second wicket. After lunch only Weir, Lamason, Carson and Tindill offered much resistance to the steady bowling of Evans and Nichols. Tke later was remarkably inexpensive, considering tke conditions favoured tke batsmen. He bowled 33 overs at top pace for only 65 runs. Tindill 's .success after a long lean period was an encouraging prelude to tke test. ' Essex 's second innings opened sensationally. Page took an acrobatic catck in slips to dismiss Eastman, tke former Otago coach. Cowie and Dunning enjoyed early effeetiveness, altkougk tke wicket was still lifeless. Vivian took a quick valuable wicket. Wilcox, tke Cambridge captain in 1933, again played a fine innings. Tke tourists finisked tke day in a very promising position. ■ • l"he weather was like a midsummer day in New Zealand. Tke attendance svas about 4000. Scores:— NEW ZEALAND , First InnTngs.
