General Business of Meeting

WAiFUhUitAU, mis juay. At the monthly meeting of the Waipawa County Council yesterday the chairman, Cr. N. M. Paulsen, was granted leave of absence. In his stead the deputy-chairman, Cr. -L. Glenny presided over Crs. T. Butler, C. Thomson, C., E. Bainbricige and- B, Gray. The clerk, Mr F. Holt, and the engineer, Mr Y. E. Douglas, were also present. /ihe Forest Gate water race committee wrote askmg that the council revise the systein and alter the incidcnco of taxation, and the Lindsay water race committeo wroto asking that Nash's and Simmonds's properties, Springhill, be included in the water race area. On the cliairman's motion it jvas de.cided to call a meeting of the ratepayeis in cach case, the riding members, engineer and clerk of tbe council to attend, and go into tbe position J'ully. A letter from the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Co-operative Association, Takapau, advised the council that, under the new regulations governing fixation of petrol prices, they could not continue with tlie present arrangement of ■ supplying benzine at the j>resent •rate, but the Shell Co., were,, jirepared to instal a pump at Takapau in the council's yard at a, cost of 10/- a year, tlie Farmcrs'' to do -ihe servicing. — Tho engineer explamed that arrangements had been inade with Messrs Limbrick Bros, Waipawa, for future snppjy. The New Zealand Counties' Association, in a ciroular, reqtiested support i'or tho proposal to form an Industrial Union of Employers. — It was decided to acccde to the request and give the dcsired support. , A letter Jtroni Mr A. Wilmott, asking that tho road past ' his house be emprovcd, wns referrcd to tbe engineer for attention. Tlie Main Highways Board wrote advising tho council that that portion qf the Napier-Pahnerston North State Highway lying within the county would bo taken ovcr by tiie board as from to-day. Tho council was thanked for its "attention to maintenance work in tbe past.— Received. On Cr Thomson' s motion, the council decided 'that the engineer be asked to preparo a rcport on the cost of widening the cuttings on the SherivoodAslilcy Clinton road. Accounts totavling £1286 5/1 'were passed for payment. The telephone linesman (Mr A. Parkiu) rcported that Friday's gale had brought down some trccs in the Blackburn district, damaging the telephone and powcr lines. The ranger reportcd liaving remOved 17 head of stock from county roads during the month. The following works were authorised; Light metalling to be done on Smith's road in the Waipawa riding, and patching to be done on the Hinerua road. Cr. Butler drew attention to tbe fact that there was no notice board at the Tikokino pound, and he was appointed to inquire and report as to the position in regard to the pound. The deputy-chairman and Rr Butler were appointed a sub-cosnmittee to deal with tenders for the supply of chips for tarsealing. A bad corner on Holden's road is to be Gut back on tbe recommendatien of the engineer. The engineer stated that he liad advised the Labour Pepartment that Show Day and the date for the South African match at Napier would be holidays for the county employees. The engineer is to have authority to grant pcrmission for the removal of spoil frpm county roads, a royalty of sispcnco a yard to be charged. f
