WHO SHOULD PAY?

Maintenance of Stock-Hoiding Yards CONFERENCE TO BE CALLED The appareut deadlock reached in regard to stock-holding yards in the Hawke's Bay eounty was viewed witli some alarm by members of the Hawke's Bay County Council to-day. Recently the yards at Bridge Pa, in the Poukawa riding, were thorouglily repaired in hardwood timber. To-day the engineer, Mr. R. Puflett, reportcd that to put the Crissoge yards in similar condition would cost £370. In tbo County was a total of 82 stock-holding paddocks, 17 of which were in tho Okawa riding. *'lt is absolutely essential that we should have another conference with the freezing companies and the stock and station . agents and. thrash this question out thoroughly," said Mr..vE/ H. Beamish. "It is not fair that "this council should have to bear the whole of the maintenanGe of theae yards." "In view of big commissiohs thbt the mercantile firms deriv© from stock which use our yards, they should contribute towarda their .maintenance," said Mr. C. C. Smith. "As the outcome of a conference they should realise the great benefit. that they are receiving from our yards." "I would like to poiut out that iu my riding it has cost a lot. of money, to proviae stock roads in.addition to the stock-holding paddocks," said Mr. C. Lassen. The chairman, Mr. E. B. Logan, pointed out that the conditions as they txrsted to-day had not applied to the same extent m the past, and he hoped that an amicable arrangement could be arrived at. On the suggestion of Mr. Beamish it was agreed that a conference should Ua called of representatives of the freezing companies and mercantile iirms to reconsider the whole question.
