SYDNEY, Aug. 7. There was perfect weather for the hockey match between New Zealand and NeW South Wales at the Sydney Sgortaground, NeW Zealand being beaten by three goals to one. It was the first Australian victory for 14 years. New Zeal&nd commenced at a iizrific pace and crowded the forwards, rushing the ball into the New South Wales circle. Polished stickwork was absent, but Duffield opened the New Zealand acCoxmt with a flick shot within ten minutes of the commeneement. New South Wales equalised five minutes | later, Bates netting from a scrimmage; in the goal Mouth. George Hurrell then ; increased New South Wales' tally with a shot sent in after k run down jtha wing. The home team's third goal came When Jack Hurrell, brother of the previoxis Scdrer, with a hard shot hit Smeliie, the ball going slowly into the net. The strenuous New Zealand attacks were all repulsed*by the New South Wales backs. The New Zealand forwards, Duffield) Monteith and Boughton, broke through often but eould not ■ score. The New South Wales go&lkeeper was outstanding, playing magnificently, aometimes kicking the ball to half-way. For New Zealand Duffield, Monteith and BOughton showed to best advantage, vrhile Pearce, centrC-half for New South Wales, was the outstanding player on the field.
