A Peiping -message states that | General Chang-Tze-Chting, . the poltical and military controller of Peiping, has resigned on the ground of ill-health, eausing the termination of local military activity. The Times ' Shanghai correspondent says that military and other official talks at Nanking are still proceeding without result. An important section of opinion clearly favours a compromise, though Japan has left little room for it, as she has already moved the headquarters of the East Hope! Government to Peiping and is bombing Chinese troop trains hnndreds of miles further south. ^ommercial cireles. in Shanghai still refuse to believe war is unavoidable, though they admit that the cost of ayoiding it may be ruinous as, ai least, it will meafl the surrender of a large slice of Chinese territory, A Peiping message states that a motorised colnmn of 500 vehicles, inelnding tanks and armoured ears and 1500 men, carried the Japanese flag through Peiping before marching to Tungchow. Silent, sullen crowds of Chinese -v watched the victors, first parade of military power whieh Japanese • residents greeted wilh showers of fiowers. Fears are expressed as 10.000 ^Chinese troops are advaneing on Hankow to attack the Japanese eoncession where a state of emergency has been proclaimed. Japanese marines were landed and barricaded and wired the conc.essiom Foreigners have heen warned to leave immediately. The Japanese military authorities declare that the Chinese threatening attitude on the Pei-ping-Suiyan railway is making the situation worse. It is estimated that nearly 45.000 Chinese are converging on the .Pelping-Tien-tsin area. The troops are within eight of Peiping. It is reported that the Chinese. cttaeking in torrential- rain, surprised the Japanese and recaptured Lian-Changhu, an important railway centre.
