LUBITSCH DIRECTS DIETRICH IN "ANGEL"
After an absence of more than two years, the dxrectorial talents of Ernst Lubilsch, credited by many with being the finest an the history of films, will return to the screen next month wfith Ihe production of "Angel," in which lie will direct Marleno Dietrich. "Please make it emphatic that l'm back at my 1 old job of directing pictures again " he said recently. "All of the pictures that I've had anythmg to do with during the past two years were directed by somebody else and it has been necessary for me to work by remote eontrol, which hasn't pleased'me at all." Lubitsch was ref erring to this work in an executive capacity at the Paramount studios, where he co-ordinated the elforts of a score of othcr directors xvithout being able to indulge his own creative talents in this field. A1 though his present title includes that of producer, he will direct all of his own pictures. ""I look forward to gettmg back into my old duties with a great deal of reHsh," he declared. "There is 110 substitute for creative effort, once you 1 have tasted the satisfaction it brings. We have a very good story with ParisLondon background, written by Melchoire Lengyol, which has been apjiroved all around. " He added that lie and Miss Bietnch liad been trying to get together on a pictare for many years, but that conflicting schedulcs had kept them apart. "Miss Dietrich is a personality 1 have always wanted to direct," ho declared, "and she has been kind cn'ougli to have repeatedly songht me as a dircctor. AVe arc . both glad to have arrangcd things. "
