(By Telegraph-
PALMERSTON N., Last Night. "People like these are pests, and a source of annonyance; quite a number 6f dances have been marred by these irrational persons," said Senior-Ser-geant J. Mclntyi'e in the Magistrate's Court to-day when Bartholomew Cox, labourer, and a Maori, James Hirini, appeared before Messrs J. A. Nash and T. R. Lees, J.P.'s, to answer charges oi behaving in a disorderly mauner while drunk at a dance given by a local Rugby club in honour of the Springboks. Each was fined £2 in default 48 hours' imprisonment. "Evidence was given that the -dance authorities had remonstrated with Cox for leaning up against some temporary decorations. He had then proceeded to tear them down, and, on being removed from the hali ,he had attempted to strike the proprietor. Hirini pleaded guilty to the offence. Addressing Hirini, the Bench said: "It is deplorable to see you involved in such an affair. You belong to a race we are proud of. It is true that it is not the first time you have been in trouble, but you have seemingly made a creditable attempt to lead a better life, and we will take that into account. For the honour of your own pepole we hope this ' sort of thing will not occur again."
