"A nefc annual immigration of 10,000 would enable us to reach the population tuark set by the Five Million Club in about 345 yearB," said ProfeBsor H. Belshaw in an address to members of the Auckland branch of the Economic ■society of Australia and New Zealand. 'This is even if present population remained stable, and the immigrants succeeded in reproducing themselves." tncreased Hotel Tariffs. 1 A forecast of probable increases in hotel tariffs for the coming season is shown in data recently collected by the Automobile Association (Auckland) for the revision oi its tourist guide. An official of the association has visited practicaily every hotel m the North lsiand, and he gathered the impression that a number of accommodation houses will add 10 per cent to their rates, principally because of increased cost of i'oodstutfs and higher wages. The Small Differencesu "Anyone who visits a country for the tirs't time notices particularly the small differencos," said Professor J. Rutherford, of Auckland University College, at a farewell luncheon given in his honour by the Royal Empire Society. When I came to the Dominion about three and a-hali years ago I noticed the small annoyances, such as the fact that cigarettes cost more, pints of beer were smaller and the postmen delivered letters to a box about 30 yards down the drive." Professor Rutherford added that n couutry was appreciated properly only after one had become accliiuatised. Wlien he reached England he doubtless would consider hnnself a New Zealander and would be given to ooasting about the Dominion's achievements. .
