POVERTY BAY HUNT

'The

Barb.")

Sm^II FieWs Engaged To-morrow REVIEW 0F RUNNERS

(By '

The raoing season for 1937-38 will be opened to-morrow at Gisborne with the annual raee meeting of the Poyerty Bay Hunt. The fields engaged are ia little disappointiqg, but nevertheless the racing should be interesting, Only four paid up in the Hurdles. Hunting Star is unsound, and Bothwell is anything but promising but has a little experience as well as always produejng his best efforts at this meeting. Mahala, down this way last June, gave indications that wRh more schooling ''might become at least useful. The otlier is the unknown Grantham. The mile hack race should be close and interesting, as all five are possibilities. The only open race on the programme is the Hexton Haudioap, run over a mile and a quarter. Mr. Fitzgerald holds a very fair hand in He Ffiend and Small Roy, but Gay Hunter is a useful sort that will be all the better for last week'g racing. The remaining trio are all likely sorts. The Fergusson Gold Cup Steeplechase, for qualifled hunters, is run over two and a half miles. Kahunoke is a very fair soj-t, and will need to be with over 13st, to lupip over the couutry. Puccini is said to be a brilliant jumper at times, but has a bad habit ox "pecking" wlien landing. , Royal Toast may prove the best of the others qn his third. to Kahnnpke and Platter last week, The Swfttbmoor Maideu, 5 furlongs, will see the largest field saddlpd up, with three or four showing promising form. The Hunter 's Bracelet finds another small field, with four of the flye runners with earlier engagements. The last event of the day, the Rapanui Hack, finds the hardesfc puzzle of the day to solve, as the majority of the runners showed very fair form at the Turf Club's meeting last week-end. The following horses may uome in for a good deal of suppoH in th6ir respective races; — AWAPUNI HURDLES. — Bothwell, Hunting StarWHATUTU HACK. — Skyway, Haile Boy.
