Victoria College Defeats Auckland

AUCKLAND, Tfiis Day. For tfie sixteenth time Victoria College, Wellington, won tfie shieid for tlie Joynt Scroll debate between N§w Zealand university collegea in tfie thirty-third contest held at Auckland last evenipg, tfie subjeet being: "That democracy lias failed." In the first debate, Mr. A. R.. Periy opened for Victoria in the affirmative, Mr. D. L. Wood, the Otago leader re* plyingi Other speakers were Messrs. S. G. Andrews, Victoria, and M. G. O 'Callaghan, Otago. The second debate between Canterbury and Auckland was broadcast, the speakers being Messrs. B. J. Wilson and M. Widddup, Qanterbury, and H. T. George and E. K. Braybrooke, Auckland. The judges, Mr. Julius Hogben, Mr. J. W. 8haw and the Bev, Gladstone Hughes, placed Victoria first with 19.1 points, Auckland being next witfi '179. Mr. Andrews was adjudged tlie best speaker with Mr, George one point baLiuua.
