H.B. TOURING TEAM

"Centre").

Napier Members Not Mafcing The Trip PLAY LAST WEEK

(By

Once again we have to rejwrt on a day of importance to basketballers, this in connection with representatives of this province at the New Zealand championriiips On Saturday last a match of very great importance was played in Waipukurau between the representative team of Central Hawke's Bay and of Dannevirke. Judging by the number of supporters prtsent from Dannevirke, basketball must have become very popnlar in . that centre. The match was to determine v^hicV team was to represent the Hawke'i Bay Basketball TJnion in the Jfiinoi grade at tke New Zealand ckamjpionskips in Auckland. Tke game pardved to ke a very uneven one, with & good deal Of over defence 4 and personai «ontact being noticeable in both teams. From very early in the game Central made their superiority apparent, Dannevirke playing an "unnished" game, owing to lack of experience of play, against outside teams. Tke eombina* tion of Central's forwards was excellent, their centres also making good nse of tke, couTt. Editk Moore (ex Hawke's Tepresentative) was outstianding in tke forwards, witk D. Page also showing good judgment. A face known to local players was seen in tke Dannevirke centre third, tkis being Leila Wilson, wko was a member of tke H.S.O.G. A team last season Leila still plays a very tmaTfi game, and appeared to Ibe the best centre player in her team. Central W6re tke winners of the match by a' good margin, tkns eaming the xight to tke title of Hawke *s Bay minor team. The players are to be congratulater on tkeir attainment, and witk training 3n store for the next month, "there iS no reason wky tkey skonld not make a name for themselves in Ancklatid. r Match at Walpnacorau. The H.S.O.G. A1 team ir&velled to Waipukurau also, and played a match against Central's second nine, with -'a view to the selection of Central '• three extra players in the evetth of their winning their Dannevirke match. O.G, kad tke best of the game thronghont, winning by a very comfortable margin, and showing combination that wae a credit to .them. Hawke's Bay. Major Team It will be leamed with regret bjp al keen f oUowers of basketball that jthc Napier members of tke -Hawke's Bay major team have been withdrawn by their association. * This faet wae not mdae known nntil Saturday last* The position is quite clear, however, when it is remembered that the Napier representative team diew With Wellington B representatives for major hofaonxs at a tournament held in Rotorua last season, at which teams from all over the North Island competed. Adviee from Rotorua reveals the faet that thai tournament is being held on iSeptenbee 3 and 4, thus clashing with the datee of the New Zealand tournameiit. Thei Napier association feels that it is its. duty to defend their title at Rotorua! with their best team, and have there - fore withdrawn their members from the Hawke's By team in favour. of tho Rotorua tournament. The Hastings Association weiti not sloWj however, to grasp ihe sttuattoft, and it has been decided that ihe Hastings representatives travel to Auckland as Hawke's Bay mayjr, and already arrangements are in hand §oz the rising of the neeessary money. We cannot help but feel sorry for those Napier players who. have had to forsgo Hawke's Bay honours itt favour Of their own association, but as it ii tho opinion of the majority of tho Napier executive that this should be done, wo cannot do i^ore than hope that tho Napier team will this year win tho trophy in Rotorua ontright, instead of drawing for rst place as happened last year. The Hastings players arti gaining furtker experience at a New Zealand tournament, and tkis will go a long way in raising tke standard of basketball even more in Hastings. In connection witk the raising of funds, it kas been decided to hold a skop on a Saturday very soon, when all clubs are aslced to give their help towards maknig it a sueeess. The proceeds are to be utilised for the benefit of both .Tkursday and Hawke's Bay representative teams proportionately. Referees. A special meeting of referees « was ealled for last Monday evening, but very few referees responded to the notice. However, tkose present wero given* an insight into some of tke rulings, and tke examination paper was read and discussed. A furtker meeting of referees is to be held on Monday next, and all referees are earnestly requested t'o be prsent, as important business is to be discussed.
