TUTAEKURI MOUTH

Chairman Satisfied with Work of Groyne BOARD DISCUSSION The new mouth of the Tutaekuri was now running due north, in fact had gone- a little bit back, reported the engineer, Mr. G. Rochfort, to yester. day's meeting of the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board in Napier. Thfc bloeks were subsiding in the way . they were expected to do, but unfortimately at one part had been pushed over by the weight on the northern side. The second core block had not shifted, but the other line had subsided and wai now 15 feet below the level of the water. The end block was tipped over on its side and was there for all time^ settling down into position that way* It might be aa well, Mr. Rochfort saidi to put in an extra block or two on the river side to balance the blocks on the northern side. The outer slabs had had tho full force of the river for three weeks and ha'd not shifted. He did not think the grorne would have a worse time even in ilood wian it had received. . Ths river was at present turning away from the old mouth, whieh still had plenty of water in it. He thought the new mouth was now practically as. sured. ' The chairman, Mr. C. Lassen, saicl he: was satisfied with the work the groyne had done. The Tutaekuri mouth shifted so fast that if there was any doubt about the work it might be ad* visable to get on with the Ngarurorof groyne. Mr. Rochfort said that ^before the earthquake the Tutaekuri .ran all .right but that the lowering of the bed a| the shore had made a difference, The work would require to be thoroughly tested. To run a low-level groyne to the end of the present groyne might have some effect, but might cut ofi the present overflow. Mr. L. E. Harris said he would not* like to see any cheese-paiing in tlie matter. They wanted to make a good job of the Tutaekuri groyne. Evcntually it was deeided to consult with the Public Works engineer 'ea what was to be done.
