Photographer Drowned in Auckland Harbour

AUCKLAND, Last Night. An Air Force photographer, Leonard Orr Smellie, aged 23, was drowned about a quarter of a mile from the air base wharf at Hobsonville on Saturday afternoon when a sudden gust of wind overtarned a small yacht in which he and another photographer were sailing. Although parties of men dragged the harbour until nightfall on Saturday and.. again to-day the body waB not re-' covered. The photo^raphers Smellie and H. C. Hanning were sailing a small Tauranga, class yacht betwoen Beachhaven and; Hobsonville wharf. The water was comparatively cairn at the time when suddenlv the yacht was seen to hoel | over and watchers on the shore saw one iman clingiug to the overtarned boat. •while the other struck out for the shore. Aircraftsman Anderson launched a dinghy from the shore to rescue them,; but the swimmer Smellie disappeared from view and wheu Hanning was safely ashore a hurried search was mado for the missing man but without ayail. Smellie was a young Christchurch man who come up to Hobsonville air base three years ago.
