Over Thirty Each Year

AUCKLAND, Last Night. Mention that about 30 patients were being cured annually at the Makogai Island leper station was made this morning by J)v O. J. Austin, superintendent of t^ie island, who arrived by the Monowai. He is on nine months' furlough. He said that in the past 20 years the number of cases successfuUy treated was over 400. There were 575 cases on the island to-day, representing 11 nationalities. Nearly all were natives. Dr Austin expressed appreciation of what had been done by people in New Zealand tp provide gifts for the patients, particularly at Christmas. He said that at present the Fiji Rotary Club was endeavouring to raise sufficient money to purehase a talkie equipment, as, the silent projector given by New Zealand 10 years ago was now of little use because of the laek of silent films. With Dr Austin was Father Gonnet, ehapiain to the mirsing sisters, who is visiting Auckland for health reasons.
