MARSDEN ANNIVERSARY.
This week marked the hundred and seventy-third Anniversary of tbe birth of one of the best beloved figures in New Zealand history. On July 27, 1764, Samuel Marsden was born. His life work became oue of the greatest missionary achievements in history. Seven times Marsden visited New Zealand, making venturesome journeys into the inlerior. This is the centenary oyear both of his last visit to New Zealand and of his death. It was typical of his devoted interest in New Zealand that his last words were an expression of his hope for its welfare. The Maoris held Marsden in high esteem. They respected him as a man and they listehed to his earnest teachings. The result was that Marsden, on his last visit at the ago of 72, was able to say that, contrasted wth the sfcate of the natives on tffe occasion of his first visit in 1816, he saw some fruit and could "thank God and take courage.
