PROPULSION BY ROCKET
Propulsion by means oi rocket fire eontinues to show promise of amountmg to something besides a fad. Out for its first trial run near Paris recently, was a "rocket-mobile," built by the engineer M. P. Millet. "Puite satisf actory " was his answc-r to queries of how sueeessful he felt this first venture had turned out. The veliicle is a single eylinder "motor" based on the theory of the fluid roeket. The inventor deelared that he achieved 40 miles an hour and a fairly stable pace.
" Koeke try" is a field of investigatdon that has gone well beyond the "laughing-off" stage. In Europe and on the Coutinent, many societies are carrying on necessary pioneer work, and because it is so new and so com- '
plex a subjeetj cQ-operation is remarl ably achieved. America, too, is not without dnvesti gators. Transportation into the highe regions of the earth's atmosphere — -per haps beyond— -has long been the dreatn of Prof. Bobert E. Goddard of Clark University. He dreamed and worked alone for years; bnt to-dayj in his desert retreat in Arizona, he has the support of the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aeronauties and the stamp of approval delivered by the Flying Colonel himself. Iu a reeent letter to the president of Clark University, Colonel Charlca A. Lindbergh predieted that commerca "must look to the rocket, if we hope to attain speeds of transport about a few hundred miles an hour,"
