Loss to Hawke's Bay Team CARE 0F SHUTTLES
(By
The Hawke's Bay teain to play in Palmerston on Saturday will be weakened by the loss of Roy Orr, second player on the ranking list. Orr has left the district, . and although be is at present in Palmerston, it is uniikely that the selectors wili include him in the local team. Although his absence will give a chance to Leo Vesty, the latter has not been playing as well as usual, but if he is in form at Palmerston he should. gather in several victories for Hawke's Bay. If lack of incentive has been his trouble, inclusion in the A representatives might be a remedy. The most dmproved Hastings representative on the ranking list ie Miss M. Glenny. A good player early ia the season, she is now, in doubles, a long way ahead of any others seen in action this winter. Like most Hawke's Bay players, she has little opportunity for singles practice, but this week is to play a ladder mateh against Miss Maedonald. Both Miss Glenny and h©r brOther have a natural advantage iii being quick and light on their feet. Miss J. Lassen, of the Methodist club, is at present playing better than Mdss Lancaster, Hastings, who, as No. 5, is ranked above Miss Lassen. Of the two the latter has the more fluent style, although Miss Lancaster has a surprisingJv powerful baekhand. Although recently defeated 21 — 19 by Aked in Napier, H. Blliot, the popular president of the Hastings elub, is playing very well. If any of the flrst six men on the ranking list are unable to travel to Palmerston next week-end, Elliot, now No. 7 on the list, would be a useful substitute, His badminton is as consistent as his tennis — which is saying a great deal. Competing Teams. In the inter-provincial tourney at Palmerston the following teams will compete: "Wellington, Wairarapa, Manawatu, Wanganui and Hawke % Bay. It is possible that there will be a sixth team, from Taranaki^ but it is doubtful whetker they can arrange the trip. In this tournament last yoar% Hawke's Bay team came last, so our representatives stlll hav© a rcputation to maka.
The North Island championships wifl be held in Hawke % Bay on August 17, 18, 19, and 20. The New Zealand Championships are at Dunedin on September 8, 9, 10, 11, Care of Shuttles. One of the heaviest expense iteins on club balance sheets is the cost of shuttles. If all players would remember that the feathers Of a shuttle should be smoothed out at frequent intervals during play this item of expense might be lessened. It is also quite Unnecessary to serape the shuttle along the floor towards an OppOnent m this1 fashion the. feathers are often struck and disarranged. Considerinothe amount of care and accuraey necessary to produce the surprising eonsistency and strength combined in the average shuttle, it surely deserves some . care when ia uae.
