WAIKATO MAORIS

Conference with M.P.'s There was v a representative gathering of about 300 Waikato Maoris at Ihe Rukumoana Pa, Kiwitahi, Morrinsville, on Saturday, to confer with members1 of the National Advisory Couneil of the Labour party. Among the visitors were Messrs E. L. Cullen, M.P. for Hawke's Bay, A. Campbell, M.P. for Chalmers, H. T. Ratana, M.P. for Western Maori, Snd the Hon. Bangi Mawhetu, M.L.C. Mr R. Coulter, M.P, for Waikato, was also present. The conferqnce lasted from about 11 a m. to 4 p.m. and the subjects discussed included the Treaty of Waitangi, the compensation claimed by tho Maoris for the lands confiscated by the Government after the Maori War of the 'sixtieS; the question of th6 Orakei Maori settlement, and rates and taxes on native lands. Further discussion wag deferred until the Prime Minister and Minister T>f Native Affairs, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, returns to New Zealand.
