SEWER CONNECTIONS
Satisfactory Arrangement for State Houses A satisfactory arrangement has been arrived at by the Hastings Borough Council and the Government Housing Department regarding the installation of common drains for sewerage in the areas to be built upon under the housing 6chemo in Hastings. At the last meeting of the Hastings Borough Council objection was raiscd to the decision of the department to have one sewer connection laid on to two houses, and it was pointed out that this was entirely contrary to the bylaws and general policy of the borough. The suggestion was then made that some aseurance should be given by the Government that in the evont of any of the houses being sold to tenants or others, or the properties being fieehold, then each property would have a separate sewer service. This suggestion was taken up by the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, with the constructional engineer of the Housing Department, Mr. Tindall,-. in Wellington last week, and an agreemeut was reached. "An undertaking ia to be given the Borough Council that, should the properties become freehold, or should they be sold, then the Government will undertake the provision of separate connections, " said Mr. Maddison. Regarding the same housing scheme, Mr. Maddison added that he made reference to the report of the borough engineer, Mr. C. E. Evans, on the type of pipes proposed to be used for the water connections, and an assurance was given that the pipes would be castiron, in accordance with the policy adopted by the Borough Council, but would havo a additional feature in that they would be cemenf-lined.
