CLUB HOCKEY
Sparkling Displays on ' Saturday JUNIOR REP. TRIALS Those enthusiastic hockey enthusiasts who clustered on the sidelines at Nelson Park, Napier, on Saturday were treated to some sparkling displays, and club hockey of the very higbest standard was wjtnessed in several of the encounters. In the men's senior game between Kiwi and Taradale, botli sides played splendid hockey, each playing with fine combination and perfect understanding between the backs and the forward line. In positiolial play the Kiwi forward line was slightly superior, and in this respect the captain, Best, was a shining example. Kiwi maintained their undefeated position, but they had to thank thedr veteran goalkeeper, Bob M.cUutcheon, for saving them on several occasions and getting them out of some tight corners. On the day's play there was little or nothing between the two teams, and [Taradale played their best game for a long time. This game, coming after a similar fine game against Scinde two weeks ago, makes one wonded how they were beaten by Waratahs three weks ago. Kiwi's three goals might. have been more but for one shot striking a goal post and two or three other hitting the side of the het. The Scinde- Waratahs match also was a fine open game, with Scinde always definitely superior, though the bristling Waratah' s forwars were dangerous at times. ; The senior women' s games were chiefly noticeable for the fact that two junior teains which had entered the senior competition through the junior competition being discontinued , were having their first games in the senior ranks. Both the promoted juniors played well,- but Tui, with the youngest players in the competition, were handicapped in their match against Te Awa, the senior competition. leaders, by not having a full team and by playing without a goalkeeper for the greater part of the game. hTis gave Te Awa a big advantage, and jn the early part of the game they repeatedly ran through With hardly any opposition and scored. Three goals were notched in the first five minutes of the game. But Tui sugsequently livened up .and not ohly defended' better but on several occasions penetrated the Te Awa defence and looked dangerous for a time. In - one of- these attacks Miss Lister beat the defence and shot a goal. The game in whicL the erstwhile junior Taradale team met Tech. Old Girls jvas a much more even game, and Taradale made the game very willing and were unlucky in not scoring, several attempts failing through lack of experience. Only this ' lack of experience in senior hockey was responsible for their defeat. ' The men's junipr games :were confined to two matches between teams of Probables and Possibles for representative junior honours. In neither game was anything. better than good club play seen, the A gaqae being the best. In both matches the Possibles beat the Probables, and wliile the two B teams were fairly equal the A Possibles, were much too good for the probables. Following are the results: — SENIOR WOMEN Te Awa (8) v. Tui (1) : — Misses Redshaw (2), Simmonds (2), Alderson (2), Daniels, and Mrs D- Hill scored for Te Awa, and Miss Lister netted for Tui, Mr R.
