Degree Conferred Upon Mr. N. A. Foden

WELLINGTON, This Day. . The degree of doctor of laws was conferred upon Mr Norman Arthur Foden, Wellington, and Mr" Ross Hepburn. Christchurch, at the- monthly meeting of the executive committee of the New Zealand University Senate yesterday, Mr Foden recently conducted the proceedings at the Napier Hospital inquiry. Mr Foden was first educated at. Hawera, and was dux of the Hawera High School. He continued his studics at Victoria University College, where he had a distinguiBhed career, graduating master of arts in 1925 and master of laws in 1926. Mr Foden is a barrister and solicitor by profession, aud has been in practice in Wellington since 1921. Nearly two years ago he joined the Crown Law Office, where he is now an acting-Crown solicitor. He is lecturer in accountancy law at Victoria University College. With three brcthers he served as an infantryman in the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in France, being twice wounded in the battle of the Somme, In 1934 and 1935 he was in London, collectin'g material at the public records office for his thesis, "The Genesis of New Zealand Legal History," for which he was awarded his doctorate, the examiner being Professor Berridale Keith, of Edinburgh University. Mr Foden has always taken a keen interest in sport, both as a player and an administrator, and he -has been prominent in swimming., hockey and lawn tennis. His parents are Mr and Mrs Edward Foden, Hawera, and he is a nephew o-f Mr and Mrs W. T. Grundy, Hawker street, Wellington. OTHER DEGREES CONFERRED The following degrees were also conferred : — Bachelor of Arts : Canterbury University College, Jolin Martus Amies, Joyce Strachan Beli; University of Otago, Gordon Stuart Doig. Bachelor of Science : Canterbury University College, Gordon Noel Macdonald. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery: University of Otago, Alexander Stuart King, Ernest Going Loten. Bachelor of Dental Surgery ; University of Otago, Noel Ernest Mathewson.
