BILL
BOWYANG.
More Money and More Houses Sir, — Allow me to agree with Simple Simon's remarks. A house that would be a credit to a town would cost, with land, £1000. Oue thousand at . 6 per cent. for interest and depreciation £60, add another £10 for rates, taxes, painting and repairs, makes £70, which works out at about 27/- a week. When finished, these houses should be given to men on sustenance, who have large families; a soeialistic Government would not press for rent. The country could do with 5000 of these houses, which would absorb £5,000,000. ■ It is getting too near eleetion time to squeeze this amount out of the'^vealthy taxpayers, but Mr. Savage could probably borrow it before leaving England. Another point brought up at the Chamber of Commerce — was the Government assessing rented land for landtax purposes? I am paying 2/6 a week for a £500 town section to graze old Strawberry on. The owner informs me, although he pays land-tax, I must notify the Government I have rented it, and I will have my land-tax substantially raised on that account. Perhaps. Mr. Arch Lowe could tell me if this is cor-
rect. — Yours, etc.
