TUTAEKURI CHANGES MOUTH
Turns North After Passing Beneath Bridge BOARD'S PLANS UPSET The Tutaekuri river has changed its course at its mouth near the Waitangi bridge during the last, ±'ew days and, by so doing, it has upset the plans of the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board. . The river has turned in a northerly direction after passing beneath the bridge, so that it now crosses the beaoh line at a point aJ.Qngside the end of the concrete groyne instead of entering the sea through the mouth which was opened last month directly opposite the Waitangi bridge. The change was brought about in less than 48 hours. At present there is a bank of five feet of shingle above the level of the river dn the rejected mouth. It had been hoped that the concrete blocks of the entire groyne would sink at a uniform rate, but the growne has sunk in one part only. The rivers board 's engineer^ Mr Guy Rochfort, expressed the view yesterday that a flood of sufficient size to clear the mouth would set matters right. It was possible, he said, that the new mouth would gradually close up and that the river would find another outlet farther south. As the groyne sinks, further concrete blocks will be placed on top of those now in position, this being the plan originally arranged-
