THE NEW "HACK" RULE
Question of Eligibility
The question has been raised, says a southern writer, as to whether a horse that has run out of haek Class at the present is eligible for entry fof races to be decided after August 1. The present rules stand nntil July 31, and it senms .that nntil after that date any such horse is ineligible. for entry as a -''haek." If, for instanee, a horse was disqualified up to Jnly 31 he would be ineligible for nomination nntil the expiry of the term. It may savour of hair-splitting, but the Canterbury Jodkey Olub has got round the matter by deletittg the obnoxions term hack as applied to a thoronghbred in the title of a race. The Canterbury Jockey Olub has published new conditions attached to several races on the Grand National programme, and although in a sense they override the rules of 'racing, and antieipate the effeet of a rule commencing on August 1, they poittt the way out of a difficulty to nominations closing on Friday n6xt. •
