Waterside Worker's Widow JUDGE COMMENTS ON CLAIM

WELLINGTON, This Day. A damages claim for £4027 3/6 was brought in the Supreme Court this morning, by Mrs. Lorraine Eva Mary Manning, of Lower Hutt, in connection with the death of her husband, who was struck by a falling hatch beam when loading buttor into the Durham on March 3. Mr. Justice Reed was on tke Bench, The widow has one child born six weeks after her husband 's death. She claimed £27 3/6 special and £4000 general damages. His Honour said he had no hesitation in describing the claim as extravagant. It was probably the most extravagant oi' its kind he had seen in the Courts. The jury awarded £2250 to the widow and £650 to the child, and special damages brought the total to £2927 3/6.
