GILBERT ISLAND LIFE
Link with Maori Origin Similarities in certain worde, customs and articles, proving a close link in .the origin of Maorig and the natives of the Gilbert Islands, were discussed by Mr V. F. Fisher, ethnologist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, during a lecture on the culture of the latter race, addressed to an attendance of about 200 at the museum. Mr Fisher said that, like the Maorie, the Gilbert Islanders were fond of ceremonials. In canoe building they used an effieient drill. pointed with a shell or porpoiso tooth, which bore a marked resemblance to a tool used by the Maorie in earlier days. In the preparation of foods and the ovens used by both races there was a marked similarity. Numeroqp specimens of native handiwork from the Maude collection in the museum were exhibited by Mr Fisher
