American Accusations of British Hostility

British golfors are angered by the charges made by the Americans .of unsportsmanlike conduct by spectators >lt the Ryder Cup match> especially the •Temarks of Ralph Guidahl and E. D. Dudley. Guidahl, who returned with the .Ameriean. Ryder Gup golf team, ex pressed intensely anti-British feeiings in a statement, 1 'It was my first trip over and I hope I never see the- British ngaro," he said." ''They not only eheer you when you miss a shot, but they crowd round you, so' as not to give you a chance to make it." Dudley said, "We all agreed that British antipathy to Americans reached new heights during our visit." These remarks were received with pained surprise. Henry Cotton, British open ehampion, said:. "Certainly I am astonished. There was nothing wrong with the cxowd's behaviour, although it is true they became a little impatient at the time Manero and I were takjjjg to go round. However, there was no suggestion of an anti- Ameriean -demonstration." Charles Whitcombe, the British team's captain, said the criticisin was a complete surprise. ' ' The Americans were treated just like our. own fellows. There was absolutely no hostility," he added.
