Play for 17 Hours 55 Minutes

LONDON, June 28. A young man failed at Goodwood golf course yesterday in a singular golf marathon. Mr, J. H. Perkin, of Lane Houso, Walton, road, Bognor Eegis, aged twen-ty-six, a fourteen handicap man, had taken two bets of £50 to £1 that hc could play eight rounds over the course in one day, with. an average score of .100. This is 27 more than bogey for the course. With him was Mr. A. Astbury, of Beckenham, a nine handicap member of tho Langley Park Golf Olub. Mr. Perkin had mado a side bot witli him tor the day's expeuseg. They reaehed the courso at 3 a.m., but it was not till 3.55 that the light was good enough to allow play to begin. Mr. Perkin 's cards for tbe lirst live rounds were 96, 105t. 105, 105 and 98, a total of nine more than his allowance. Perkin produced a spurt in the sixtn round, leavang his partner several holes behind. He finiehed in one liour fiftyfive minutes, his score being 104, Astbury 91. The seventh round finislied in one hour thirty-five minutes, and was completed by Perkin in 9S, Astbury 83. Astbury continued to produce good golf in the lftst round, and finished in 88 against Perkin 's 102. In the final round, Perkin 's arms gave out, whilst Astbury had difllculty in walking round the course. Final totals were: — Perkin: 813 aggregate; average 101.5. Astbury: 703 aggregate; average 88.5. Perkin s lost all his wagers.
