Well-lit Streets. One of the things that struck Mr J. A Buchanan, who has just returned to Waipukurau from Japan, was the low' cost and general prevalence of eleetric lighting in Japan All the streets are well-lit, he says, and electricity is so cheap that even the poorest hovels havp electric light JNo. Beggars. Asked if he had 6een evidonce of great poverty in Japan, Mr J. A. Buchanan, who has just returned to Waipukurau, said that, wliile there were uiany poor households about the country, he had seen no uoticeably underled cliildren and no beggars. l'oor oi otherwise, all the Japanese greetbd a visxtor with a smile. Pruning Demonstration. There was only a small attendance of residents at the pruning demonstration given by the orchard instructor of Gisborne, Mr. P. Everett, at the orchard of Mr. E. H. Haynes, Wairoa, on Wednesday afternoon"; this was due, no doubt, to the showery conditions prevailing. Mr. Everett 's demonstration was followed with much interest by those present, as he dealt with the treatment neeessary for the various types and varieties of trees. Mr. Everett also answered a number of questions. On behalf of those present Mr. L. Dalgleish thanked Mr. Everett for the demonstration and the able manner in which he hnd dealt with the queslions. Mr. Everett thanked Mr. Haynes for the use of his orchard, and Mrs. Haynes for providing afternoon tea for those present.
